Living in the Present Moment

“Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best for the next moment.”
Oprah Winfrey

Today is a new day and we have the choice to either dwelling in the past or future or become aware of the opportunities that are presenting themselves in the present moment. You may ask yourself, “How do I live in the present moment?”

Living in the present moment takes practice. Most of us are busy doing THINGS which we feel are very important and do not take the time to slow down and see what is happening around us.

My husband, Bob, would always say, “Look at those birds singing in the trees and isn’t it a shame most people don’t even see them.” Bob always took the time to enjoy nature. I on the other hand was always rushing around and never took the time to enjoy my surroundings. Slowly I began changing and noticing the beauty around me.

Some of the steps you can take to start living in the present moment are as follows:

1. Every so often take a deep breath and close your eyes.
2. Open your eyes and look for the beauty around you.
3. While sitting quietly listen to your inner voice.
4. Acknowledge yourself for taking the time.

Performing this exercise on a daily bases helped me to start living in the present moment. Today I am in touch with my inner voice and aware of the opportunities and gifts I am receiving on a daily basis.

The opportunities and gifts I have received today are as follows:
• Opportunity: I was able to fill the birdfeeders with food and then watch the birds out my office window.
• Gift: During this difficult time I am learning that people are very special and want to support me in anyway they can. I am also learning how to support others.

Please share with others who read this blog the steps you take to live in the present moment and what gifts and opportunities you are receiving today. Helen

Weight Loss Suggestions

Written on December 26th, 2007 by Helen Burton3 comments

A New Year is starting in 6 days and for a lot of us dieting is on our minds. Mark Brown of the Naked Soul Blog has graciously agreed to write an artilce discussing the impact making changes has in helping us reach our goals.

Thank you, Mark for the following article:

The Impact of Change Vs Continuing to Do What Use to Always Work

How often do you find yourself thinking, “I don’t understand why this (whatever this may be) isn’t working, I haven’t changed anything I am doing, and it always worked for me before.” This is one of the most frequent statements I hear when I have been asked to provide coaching to someone.

My answer is almost always the same, “That’s the problem” The person being coached will say, “What’s the problem”, to which I will say, “you haven’t changed anything!”. This is a trap that many of us fall into so very easily. We are going about our daily business, using the same habits, methods, what have you that produce the results that we are looking for and then all of a sudden it seems that something changes and we are not seeing the results that we are used to seeing. The first thing we do is to review our habits and methods which we quickly conclude have not changed, therefore there must be some external reason for the change in our results. We then begin to point the finger of blame at all kinds of externals, when in fact the reason for the change in results is because we have not changed!

Our habits and or methods have not changed while things around us have changed and we grow stagnant and blinded to our own self imposed limitations. Think about musical groups and singers, some have been around for 20 plus years and still produce hits, while most fade away after a few hits. Why does this happen, because they don’t change, they continue to make the same music even though the direction of popular music changes. Large successful companies go belly up because they become too complacent and do not make the changes to keep up with cultural or technological shifts.

This same thing applies to us as we continue on our journey. It has been said that we cannot solve our problems using the same thoughts that got us there in the first place. To have different results we must be willing to change and we must be aware that what works for us today, may not work for us this time next month or next year.

This applies to our eating habits, we all know that our metabolism changes as we grow older and that we can no longer eat like we ate when we were a teenager and expect the same results. In a relationship, what worked for us when were dating, may not have the same effect in a long-term relationship. This is why we must always be aware of ourselves and open to change, to shift as needed.

Consider a boxer, if a boxer through the same combination of punches each time, that combination may work at first, however his/her opponent would soon figure out what punches were being thrown and the boxer would soon be knocked out. This is why a boxer is always on the move, sticking and moving, mixing it up, constantly changing because that is the only way to successfully survive in the rink. Life is the same way, no matter what your goals are, you must continually assess, re-evaluate and make changes as needed to continue being successful.

Change is the key to growth! Trying to lose weight, then consider that your body adapts to whatever your diet is and that is why you must vary your food intake in many ways. Trying to attract a new person into your life, then consider what changes you could make in your approach that would render you more attractive (hint, the hairdo that worked for you 20 years ago, probably is holding you back, ha), seriously though you understand what I am saying. Trying to revitalize an existing relationship, then it’s probably time to make some changes in your habits. Trying to get promoted, what changes could you make that would help your talents get recognized?

I am not saying that you have to go out and morph into somebody else. No, quite the contrary, I am suggesting that you be your best possible self and understand that we are all evolving and that sometimes a slight change in your habits and methods can have a dramatic impact on your results.

Secret for Losing Weight

Written on July 10th, 2007 by Helen Burton2 comments

This is a continuation of yesterday’s Getting OFF the Diet Merry-Go-Round article, discussing your commitment to take the necessary steps to lose weight or have “the diet” do the work for you.

Are you hoping “the diet” will allow you to lose weight and you won’t have to change your thinking about food or eating habits? If you answer “Yes” to this question, you have taken the first step in realizing what is stopping you from succeeding. This realization is an opportunity you can explore and then develop a plan to change your thinking and habits. In a way this is a miracle!

If you would like to start exploring what is stopping you from succeeding please answer the following questions. Remember there is no right or wrong answers. The only thing we are doing is exploring what is hold you back from succeeding.

1. How many diets have you been on in the last year?
2. What successes did you have while on any one particular diet?
3. While on any of the diets did you change your think about food?
4. What happened to change your mind and start a new diet or just take a break from dieting?
5. What eating habits do you still follow when you either changed diets or stopped dieting? (Example: I never eat standing up.)

After completing this exercise what thoughts and ideas did you come up with? Please share your ideas and thoughts by leaving a comment or sending me an email at helen@loveyourselfcoaching.net.

I need your help in building a community where we can support each other in our journey. Please let me know if you are interested by leaving a comment or sending me an email. I look forward to hearing from you.

Affirmation Today: There is a solution and I am losing weight.

Packaging Your Passion

FOLLOW YOUR BLISS
by Steve Goodier

Author Joseph Campbell often talked about “following your bliss.” I heard of a bus driver in Chicago who does just that. He sings while he drives. That’s right… sings! And I don’t mean he sings softly to himself, either. He sings so that the whole bus can hear! All day long he drives and sings.

He was once interviewed on Chicago television. He said that he is not actually a bus driver. “I’m a professional singer,” he asserted. “I only drive the bus to get a captive audience every single day.

His “bliss” is not driving a bus, though that may be a source of enjoyment for some people. His bliss is singing. And the supervisors at the Chicago Transit Authority are perfectly happy about the whole arrangement. You see, people line up to ride his bus. They even let other busses pass by so they can ride with the “singing bus driver.” They love it!

Here is a man who believes he knows why he was put here on earth. For him, it is to make people happy. And the more he sings, the more people he makes happy! He has found a way to align his purpose in living with his occupation. By following his bliss, he is actually living the kind of life he believes he was meant to live.

Not everybody can identify a purpose in life. But when you do, and when you pursue it, you will be living the kind of life you feel you were meant to live. And what’s more, you will be happy.

I love reading this story; it helps me realize that there is no specific way of achieving your dream. Normally, I would think of a singer performing at a concert and here he is singing on a bus.

After traveling on my life’s journey, I have found my inner passion is to see other people smile and feel good about themselves. The way I fulfill this passion is to coach individuals who are tired of struggling with food and want to get off the Diet Merry-Go-Round and into a vibrant life.

What is your inner passion and how are you fulfilling your dream? Please let me know.

Do You Believe In Yourself?

“We cannot rise higher than our thought of ourselves.”
– Orison Swett Marden

Whenever we have the thought, “When I lose weight, my life will be different” automatically puts your life on hold.

Are you willing to try a little experiment and see what happens?

• For five minutes each day, make a list of all the things you like about yourself.
• Continue this exercise for the next 21 days.
• Every Friday for the next three weeks email me at www.theloveyourselfcoach.blogspot.com five things you like about yourself.

It has been proven over and over again by making this list you will focus on your special qualities and start feeling good about yourself instead of waiting until you lose weight.

I tried this exercise for 21 days, my thinking changed and started to take better care of myself. At first it was hard thinking and writing, “What I liked about myself” and then as time went along it got easier. One of the tools that really helped me was a commitment I made to a friend, on Fridays I would send her my list. The first week was the hardest because I felt I was bragging about myself and when I got her email thanking me I felt better. The second and third week got easier.

Have FUN and together holding hands we will run down the path of SELF-LOVE.

April 5th

What I like about myself
1. I am very friendly and easy to talk to.
2. I feel very pretty and like the way I look.
3. I take very good care of myself by eating healthy and exercising.
4. I am a great coach and help women realize how fantastic they are.
5. I am working on being a better wife and partner.

Diet Mentality

Written on January 3rd, 2007 by Helen Burtonno comments

New Year’s Resolutions??????

I was on the treadmill Monday morning (January 1, 2007) and listening to the News. I heard them say the number one resolution this year was “wanting to lose weight.” They also said, “Approximately 70% of the men and 56% of women do not keep their resolutions.”

When I heard these statistics, I was wondering if there was a solution for changing the resolution and these numbers in future years. Wouldn’t it be a miracle if the number one resolution would be maintaining our healthy lifestyle by eating healthy and exercising and the statistics for keeping this resolution would be around 75% (let’s not be to optimistic.)

It is the New Year and on the computer, television, radio and newspapers all you hear and read about are diets. As far back as I can remember I was always trying new diets. The sad part was that I would lose the weight and then when I went off the diet I would always gain the weight back plus more pounds. This continued for many, many years until I lost 50 lbs. and then was afraid to eat.

This cycle continued for a few years until one day I went to a Recovery meeting and heard other people tell my story. That was 8 years ago and today I eat healthy, exercise and work on maintaining loving and supportive relationships.

As they say I have walked the talk and as a Recovery Coach, I have been helping people for the last five years find or create eating plans that work for them instead of dieting and thinking about food all the time.

Let’s work together to eradicate the dieting mentality and what a miracle it would be if people started following a healthy eating plan instead of wanting to just loose weight.

I would love to hear your ideas, feedback and comments. Please let me know if you are interested in working together to eradicate the diet mentality and have people start thinking about healthy eating exercising plans .
