Entrepreneur’s Secret for Accomplishing Goals

Written on June 14th, 2010 by Helen Burtonno comments

“Be like a postage stamp –
stick to one thing till you get there.
Sheila Graham

Do you wake-up in the morning with the idea you are going to accomplish certain tasks?  Then as the day proceeds you never take action towards any of these projects.

Welcome to the world of the entrepreneur!

This morning getting out of bed, I started thinking about my to-do list.  My day started walking with my neighbor, straightening the house, answering emails, coaching clients and all of a sudden I looked at the clock and it was noon.  To my utter surprise I did not start any of the projects that were on my to-do list.  This pattern happens a lot.

What is a person to do?

Thinking about this challenge, all of a sudden the “Smart Goal” Model popped into my head.  Below is the model:

S = Be very specific
Example: My goals were write an article, research different writing groups, coach clients, food shop, take time to just relax and the list goes on and on.
M = Measure your progress
Example: My measurement would be completion of the different projects.
A = Achievable
Example: This plan was not achievable, no way could I accomplish everything in one day.
R = Reasonable
Example: Since all the items were not easily accomplished in one day, I would create a realistic
plan. This plan would be produced by reviewing my goals and choosing which items could be accomplished in a reasonable amount of time.
T = Time Table
Example: Today’s Schedule:
1:00pm – Write Article
3:00pm – Food Shop
4:00pm – Spent time with Jeffrey, my grandson relaxing
6:00pm – Coach last client for the day.

Tomorrow:
8:00am – Research writing groups
10:00am – Create a new plan

 This arrangement sounded realistic.

Please share with the Love Yourself – It Matters! Community your challenges about creating a reasonable daily plan.  I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Finding the Answer for Losing Weight

Written on July 9th, 2007 by Helen Burtonno comments

Are you tired of trying almost every diet on the planet? This is how I felt most of the time. I was always trying different diets and hoping one of the diets would make me thin. Notice I said, “This one will make me thin.” It is the diet that has to do the work not me.

As usual, after a week or two I felt the diet was not for me. Then I would try another one and the worst part was, I was spending money, the books were piling up and I was feeling more of a failure with each new diet. There had to be a better way! What did I have to do?

The answer finally came when I decided to make a commitment to do the work, instead of expecting the diet to do it for me. It was a turning point for me. I found by working with clients, taking different trainings and my own experience, the only way for a diet to work is by em>making a commitment to take the steps and not expecting the diet to do the work for you.

Following is a short quiz you can take to determine if you are committed to taking the steps or want the diet to do all the work:

1. Are you willing to follow a diet plan, even though you don’t lose weight quickly, you will continue to follow?
2. Are you willing to get help from a professional who specializes in weight control?
3. Losing weight is a major concern in your life and you will take whatever steps necessary to make it happen.
4. Realizing there are no magic fixes and the solution is in your hands.

If you answer “Yes” to the above questions it seems possible that you are committed to losing weight. If you answered “No” to any of the questions it may appear you are looking for the magic fix.

If you are committed to taking any steps to make your dreams come true. Congratulations! Today is a special day for you by taking that first step and following a healthy eating plan that works for you. If you need help in creating that plan I can be reached by leaving a comment below or sending me an email at helen@loveyourselfcoaching.net.

If most of your answers were “No” don’t give up hope. Even though you may expect the diet to work for you there is an easy way to change your thinking. Creating a Loving Me Plan which includes easy steps to follow will enable you to make a shift in your thinking.

I will continue writing on this topic and would appreciate any ideas you may have. Please send me your ideas either by leaving a comment or sending an email to helen@loveyourselfcoaching.net.

Working together we can help each other realize our goal of living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining our weight.

Nothing Works and I Can’t Stop Eating

Written on July 3rd, 2007 by Helen Burtonno comments

I received a call from a client a few days ago saying she tried different tools to stop herself from eating and nothing worked. Do you ever have this problem?

I explained to her that as human beings we are not perfect and sometimes the desire to eat overpowers us. The first step after we eat is to forgive ourselves. This step for her was very hard. We then discussed the fact that if she constantly beat herself up over eating, the thoughts of food would be on her mind and what happens she will start eating again.

We discussed different options she could take at this point, she decided to acknowledge herself for eating and take a 10 minute mini-vacation. A mini-vacation is doing something nice for yourself for at least 10 minutes. Her 10 mini-vacation after our conversation was to light a candle, listen to music and just relax.

During her next scheduled coaching session she told me, “After taking my mini-vacation I felt relaxed and was able to enjoy the rest of the day.” Later during the session we brainstormed ideas which might help her when the desire to eat was very strong. Following are some of the ideas she discovered:

1. Brush her teeth and take a walk.
2. Light a candle, listen to music and make herself a cup of tea. One of my other clients makes her favorite blueberry smoothie.
3. Call someone for support.
4. Check Helen’s blog for ideas.

The most important thing to remember is that we are all human beings and not perfect. This journey we are on is a learning experience and working together we will change our eating habits.

Please let me know what tools and tips you use when the desire to eat overwhelms you. I would love to post on my blog as many tips as possible so when the desire to eat is very strong all you would have to do is check my blog for some ideas.

Loving Yourself

Written on June 20th, 2007 by Helen Burtonno comments

Did you eat healthy yesterday? If you did, please acknowledge yourself for taking care of YOU. On the other hand, if you just indulged today is a new day. I once heard someone say, “How lucky we are to be able to start our day over anytime during the day.”

I remember waking up in the morning and thinking today I will follow my new diet. Then something would happen, I was eating everything in sight and thinking I will wait until tomorrow. This situation happened everyday, until one day I thought this is enough and I am going to get professional help with my problem.

The next day I found a nutritionist, worked with her, lost 70 pounds and kept the weight off for over eight years. Something in my thinking changed; I realized I was the only one who could take care of me and there was no magic pill.

I am working with a client who came to me in desperation because she was not able to stay on a diet and lose weight. She was looking for that magic pill that would make her thin. Jeanne (named changed) was willing to try anything that would help her lose the weight. Nothing helped to change her thinking. During one of our discussions I asked, “Was there something she was not telling me?” Jeanne then told me she felt unloved most of her life and was always trying to make people like her. We discussed the small actions steps she could take to feel loved. By implementing the following ideas Jeanne was able to change her thinking, follow a healthy eating plan and start exploring her dream career.

1. Look in the mirror everyday and tell yourself, “I love you.”
2. Give yourself a big hug before getting out of bed.
3. Tell your family members that you love them.
4. Write down what made you happy during the day before going to sleep.

The beautiful thing about our lives is that we can start our day over whenever we want. Today is your special day and you have the right to make it a beautiful day. Just for today tell yourself, “I love you” and be kind to your best friend YOU.

I would love for you to join me in writing “Getting Off the Diet Merry-Go-Round Blog,” by sharing your special gifts with the world. All it takes is one little step, leave a comment expressing your ideas and experiences.

A special note to anyone who is struggling with food, please leave a comment and I will address your concerns in my blog. Together we will create a plan that will enable you to live a vibrant life.

What are you doing nice for yourself today?

FINDING HAPPINESS

Written on June 4th, 2007 by Helen Burton4 comments

Do you sometimes feel that confusion is your middle name? Everyone is saying the answer to all our problems is to focus on our passion and everything else will take care of itself. You will start feeling fulfilled, make more money and even eat healthy. The BIG Question is “What is my passion and how do I find it?”

Coach Helen to the rescue! I know how it is to feel confused about what makes you happy and not to continue worrying about your weight, making money and achieving happiness. Let’s tear apart this dilemma and see what ideas materialize.

I have been working with a client we will name Linda, who was bored at work and felt confused about what really made her happy. Following are the step we took in uncovering her passion:

Step 1
Completed a written exercises to discover what really made her happy and satisfied her thirst for learning. After completing the exercise and brainstorming ideas during her coaching sessions, she realized that reading stories to small children made her feel like she was on Cloud 9.

Step 2
Explored what options were available in that field which she could take advantage of. Linda realized that working in a library would enable her to read stories to children several different times during the day.

Step 3
Performed informational interviews. She interviewed various Librarians at different libraries to learn what programs were available, if there was a need for her services and what credentials were required.

Step 4
Live your passion. While talking to the Librarian at the her local library, Linda was offered a volunteer position, to read stories to 2 and 3 year olds on Saturday morning. She jumped at the job and started reading stories to toddlers.

Linda now reads stories to children during the week and Saturdays. She says, I have never felt so happy in my life.” She has also gone back to college at night and is working towards her degree in Library Science.

Now is Your Chance to discover what really makes you happy! Together we will explore different pportunities in order to make your dream a reality.

As always, I would love to hear how you are growing and progressing on your journey. I am also available, if you need support in dissecting your conflicting thoughts so you can live a vibrant life. Write to me at helen@loveyourselfcoaching.net and I will email you questions to ponder.

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

Written on March 15th, 2007 by Helen Burtonone comment

“Our deepest fear
is not that we are inadequate.

It is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness what most frightens us.

You might ask yourself,”Who am I to be so brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous?”
Actually, who are you not to be!

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel unsure around you.

We are all meant to shine as children do.
We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.

As we shine our own light,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.”

Marianne Williamson

This is my favorite Inspirational Message that Nelson Mandela read during his inauguration. I often read this message and think that I am special, important and a gift to others. My favorite line is “As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” What it means to me is when I take risks not only am I giving myself a special gift I am also giving it to others.

Please let me know your feelings and discoveries, when reading this inspirational message. I look forward to hearing from you.

Living In the Present Moment

Written on January 8th, 2007 by Helen Burton2 comments

‘Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going.’ Tennessee Williams

Living in the moment was a very hard concept for me to learn. I was always thinking about the future and hoping that my life would get better. I remember that when I was a little girl thinking things would be better when I got older; then as time went on I kept thinking things would be better when I graduated from college and so on.

In 1983, I took the EST training, now known as Landmark Education. In the training I learned how important it was to live in the present moment and that only I am responsible for my life. Learning these two concepts and putting them into practice was another story. After reading self-help books, taking other trainings and sharing my ideas with other people, I learned many tools for practicing how to be in the moment and remembering that only I am responsible for my life. Some of the tools I use in practicing these concepts daily are as follows:

Living In the Present Moment

  • Stop what I am doing and ask myself, “What is happening right now?”
  • Think about what I am grateful for right now.
  • Take a moment to look out my office window and watch the birds eating from the birdfeeders.
  • Sit in a chair with my cats and listen to their purring and relax.

I Am Responsible for My Life

  • Remind myself constantly that I have choices and am responsible for whatever action steps I take.
  • Remembering I am Important and the only one who lives my life is me.
  • Expressing my feelings so others know who I am and what my desires are.
  • Taking care of myself by living a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy, exercising, and doing something nice for myself everyday.

It is so important for me to learn from other people what tools and techniques they are using to stay in the moment and being responsible for their lives. By learning from each other we can create our best lives.

I would love to hear from you please send me your feedback and comments.
