Being Kinder to Yourself

Are you being kind to yourself? Today is a new day and we have a choice to either continue doing the same thing and hoping for another result or do something different.

I was thinking about why we are the hardest on ourselves. The thought popped into my mind that the reason we are so hard on ourselves is that we want to look perfect. In order to achieve perfection we have to be hard on ourselves. How can we change this situation and be kinder to ourselves? To find the answer. I asked my clients, coaches, friends and family members what they do to make sure they were kinder to themselves. Following are some suggestions:

  1. Before getting out of bed in the morning decide what you are going to do nice for yourself that day. Make sure you do it!

  2. Be kind to yourself.

  3. While taking a shower sing your favorite song.

  4. After putting your make-up on look in the mirror and tell yourself, "You look pretty."

  5. After shaving looking in the mirror and tell yourself, "You look handsome."

  6. Today only eat healthy meals.

  7. Spend time alone each day daydreaming.

  8. Spend time with your family members sharing what made you happy today.

  9. Read your "Happiness Journal." A journal listing all the things that made you happy in the past.

  10. Keep telling yourself, "I am perfect just the way I am."

Affirmation: I give myself permission to be the number one person in my life today!

Golden Opportunities

On July 20, 2008, Mindi, my daughter, participated in an Ironman event in Lake Placid, New York. In the pouring rain, the 2,300 athletes swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles and ran 26.2 miles.

There was such excitement and energy in the air. The gun went off at 7:00 a.m. and the athletes hit the water. Their supporters were screaming and yelling and waiting anxiously to see their participant come out of the water. During the day we watched the athletes, bike, run, and finally cross the finish line. Today Mindi can say she is a two times Ironman.

Below is a picture of Mindi and her son Jeffrey crossing the finish line.

Mindi at the IronmanWhat struck me was the drive and determination the participants showed. I realized even though they had been training for months they still needed an inner strength to keep going.

Isn't it amazing when we need that inner strength it appears. During the past seven months my inner strength has helped me make changes in my own life. Today I look at life from a different perspective and seek out new opportunities.
